On October 5, 2012, I attended the Urban Film Summit sponsored by the California Film Foundation.  It was an evening of information and socializing.  I saw many familiar faces and met a few new contacts.  One new contact was, Pleshette Robertson, of the Sacramento Cultural Hub.  She was also one of  the guest speakers.  Her topic - Marketing and Branding.

She emphasized the importance of having a strong Social Media presence.  Social Media includes the following:

Website

Facebook - Fan Page

Twitter

LinkedIn

I was able to check all of the aformentioned Social Media sites off my list, as I am active on all.

I spoke to Ms. Robertson about my Social Media presence and my efforts to date to market and brand myself.

Later that evening I added all of my new contacts as friends on Facebook.  I sent Ms. Robertson a follow-up email with a link to my website.  The next morning I received a response  from her and an offer to profile me in the Winter/January 2013 issue of the Sacramento Cultural Hub.

If you want to advance your career, you have to network.  Always carry your business card with you, always.  Do not leave home without them.  Don't be shy.  Introduce yourself to as many new people, as possible.  Also, stay in contact with people with whom you have already established relationships.

Remember, it is not always about what you know, but who you know, that advances your career.
